Date: 28th June 2008
Kick-off: 12.30pm
Last time they met: 4-1 Aces, Karori, April 2008.

Match Preview:
Fuck knows how these dooshbags are first on the table but one thing we fucking all know is that they will be getting a fucking hiding this weekend. This team has one of the biggest koosers in the league, a junior janitor at Te Papa during the week, fuckwit during the weekends, and it is a given that he will be getting a few two footers to the face. It will be essential to get into this fat cunt as he will be sure to explode.

Another target for this game will the sad little emo we all see at the Mill as he serves us our 20 box of Viking 440mls and checks our ID (not mine for some reason, could be because I am mature, or it could be a flaming molotov cocktail growing on my face). This guy looks as though he will cry as soon as the little rocket walks around him, Fuck knows why they put him on defence, he is more suited to sucking the janitors kooze.

After the disapointing draw from last week the beavers will be fizzing at the arsehole to get stuck into some top quality free flowing football. You think your excited, you should feel these nipples(bring the vas wilko). So how we get as much shit into the fucking mixer and fucking have it son.

Key beavers this week:
Andre' Bishop - This guy struggles to stand up in a light breeze. He has been fucking average to say the least this season so it is about time for this cougar to score a fucking goal and have something to txt his mother.Rumour has it he will do another 2 yardies on sat night if he scores.

Rooter - This guy cant run, so we need to ensure accurate passing to this fat cunt. Hit his left foot and he will be sure to deliver

Pork - This guy is hungry. Hungry for anything. Lets feed him this week and see if he can deliver.

Simo - The maori will be anxious after having lent his shorts to me last week. He will be running all day after i loosend them up abit for him. No need for the lycras this week simo. Bring the 1.5L cause you will get thirsty.

TAB Odds:
Beaver $0.80
Aces $1.31 incl GST

Prediction:
Beavers will dominate all over the field and win with a dubious penalty in the 97th minute.

University Beavers vs Lower Hutt Roundballs (Match Report)

University Beavers vs Lower Hutt Roundballs (Match Report)

Final Result: University Beavers 1 Lower Hutt Roundballs 1

Player of the Day: Alister Hill

A slight polar chill crept across the sunshine filled Bryan Heath Park as the players and spectator arrived for their Capital 10 fixture. After some initial confusion with the spelling of the aforementioned ground quickly rectified by Sam the Man all players that had gained selection were accounted for and fit and ready to take their previous weeks success into this game.

The whistle blew and they were off. A solid start for the Beavers playing into a slight breeze from the annoying creek end of the ground. The ball was played around like the Euro 2008 had been injected into Wainuiomata for the first time this or any other season. The Beavers sent in sortie after sortie into the Roundballs third but with some excellent raids could not break the deadlock and secure the games first goal.

22nd Minute – Roundballs 1 – Beavers 0

It came somewhat as a surprise that midway through the first spell the Roundballs had a corner which was casually delivered across into the box and gleefully headed home by the unmarked Roundball on the six yard box.

A mass substitution then took place with a change in tactics with 3 on and 3 off. This changed the dynamic of the game as the Roundballs were left dazed as player after player was swapped and reswapped to allow for the odd courtesy stop and injury.

45th Minute – Beavers 1 – Roundballs 1

Suddenly a mass wave of attack ended in Ben Navajo Indian Jagermeister charging at the defence from outside the box with fleet footedness and sultry moves to completely bamboozle the defence as he weaved his magic that even Harry Potter would’ve been proud of. A quick final pivot left the last defender scrambling to stop the attack which resulted in a clumsy challenge and yells of “penalty” and a promise to the ref of a Big Mac and Fries at halftime. After trawling the history books not many would know that this was the Navajo’s first successful penalty attempt. But it was no surprise that the keeper was sent left as the Navahoe sent the ball right and himself into the history books.

Half Time came and went and it was the Beaver’s who started the second spell applying pressure again from the annoying road end. With a slight wind chill behind them Mile’s was able to deliver the ball deep into enemy territory where many raids were again initiated. As the half wore on it appeared only a matter of time before the Beavers would crack the defence. The one spectator who was brave enough to venture across the hill into the badlands was bought to her feet as a quick one two between Tayne Bone Falconer and Dave Battery opened the defence enabling Battery to curl a shot just inches past the small hobbit like goalkeepers far post.

As the half progressed so did the old adage of a game of two halves. At times it was as though an electric fence separated the attack from the defence of both teams with each throwing players forward with the reliance that each defence would hold out any counter attacks. This indeed was the case which resulted in the game withering out like an old tulip in the sun.

Some good performances were put in throughout the game by many players. Ricky Hot Pants Lizard again proved vital in the middle aswell as Navajo introducing himself to the defence through some slick insertions into their danger zone. However it was Alister Aardvark who took the player of the day for his continuous closing down of the opposition. The defence for the Beavers has certainly shown it’s wears over the last two fixtures and it would be no surprise if that cleansheet was just around the corner. We will see you next week when the mighty Beaver will once again have presented itself!

Match preview:
Round 11 of the Capital 10 premiership sees us heading out to Brain Heath park for the much anticipated mid table clash between the University Beavers and the Lower Hutt City Roundballs.

Both teams will be looking to continue in their winning ways; the Beavers comprehensive 3-1 victory over the Waterside Rovers proved to all the fans that they are a side with a real shot at taking home capital 10 gold. The Roundballs will also be on a high after coming away from Mirama with a much needed 1-0 victory over ‘cellar dwellers’ Olympic.

Despite both teams being within two competition points of each other on the overall points ladder the University side are heavy favourites at the bookies. A sight the Beavers have not seen in recent weeks and will of course be relishing in their favourites tag.

Odds aside, this match will be an extremely exiting one and is well worth tuning into Sky Sports 3 for those who are not in the Wainuiamata area.

The Beavers will be looking to again knock the ball round and use pace and width to put a number of goals in the back to the net to gain full confidence in their own abilities. The Roundballs will of course have a more direct approach to the game looking a gain early territory from the back whenever possible, always putting the opposition on the back foot. Where it will be won:Complacency: The Beavers cannot get ahead of themselves and must take their campaign one game at a time. At the back end of the season the Beavers cannot afford to be dropping valuable competition points to the Roundballs. On the other side of the fence the Roundballs can use this ‘easybeats’ tag to their advantage.

Attitude: The Beavers have a much better attitude towards the game and play a much more beautiful brand of football. If this attitude and style can be transferred down in the attacking thirty yards of the Roundballs goal mouth the Beavers could put a big score on.

Key Beaver men:
Mad dog: Inspirational saves in the previous game lifted the Beavers defence in what was one of their better performances and was a coat of paint away from man of the match. His aggression and leadership from the back will be paramount to a Beaver victory.
The Stirkers: Mann, Easton and Jagersma: Finishing opportunities has been an issue for the beavers this season. If the men upfront can put away these chances it will go a long way to insuring a second consecutive win.

TAB odds:
University Beavers: $1.70
Lower Hutt Roundballs: $4.20
Draw: $2.60

Prediction:
The Beavers will again be too fast and strong for a lack lustre Roundballs side who have never had the upper hand when the two sides have previously met.

University Beavers vs Waterside (Match Report)

Final Result: The Big Kumara University Beavers 3 - Waterside Karori 1

Player of the Match: Sam “Jockey” Cameron

Yet another “home game” for the Big Kumara Beavers, although not on the field affectionately known as The Graveyard. Would this move away from Nairnville Park see the Beavers continue their indifferent form or would a new pitch yield victory? In what many could have termed a slap in the face, the TAB had installed the Beavers at long odds and the team was keen to prove the bookies wrong and make a good return for those who had backed them.

Missing several players including Wilko Wilkinson, Dre “The Bearded One” and Matty "BZP" Smith, the Beavers knew they would need a complete team effort to take the points. The team arrived at the park as a unified group, bar Frontrunner, who was a late arrival following a big night at the Poon and a “Mission Impossible” home to Bron.

Battery’s eyebrow had recovered sufficiently from, depending who wants to know, the window/assault incident.

The incompetence of the University team playing before the Beavers meant the game would have to go ahead without nets. Would this lack of netting lead to any disputed goals?

In an unusual move Lizard Versteeg had started the game on the sideline and it was easy to see that he was keen to take the field and provide a spark from the bench.

As the midway point of the first half neared, a slick Beavers move resulted in a Guy Simmo goal, who calmly slotted it home into the back of the net. A 1-0 Beavers lead, and a goal that Ruud van Nistelrooy himself would have been proud of.

21st Minute.......... GUY SIMM 1-0 BEAVERS

It would not be the Beavers without at least one player having a spew on the sideline. This week was the turn of Samuel Barrett, who did not appreciate the Tiger from the night before.

For large periods of the first half the opposition had the run of play, without ever really threatening to dent the Beavers. The Beavers went to the break with a 1-0 lead and feeling confident about their chances.

The Beavers returned to the field after halftime with two noticeable changes. Inspirational midfielder Tayne Falconer had taken a well earned rest. The other change was not in personnel, captain Ben Shagersma had been less than pleased with his own performance in the first stanza and went to the kit bag in search of answers. Would the lace now tied tightly around his head, ala Fernando Torres, lead to big things in the second period?

Shaun Murphy was obviously inspired from the shock 30-0 result earlier in the week, leading to a few challenges that wouldn’t look out of place in a Maroon jersey.

A well struck/flukish shot from just inside the box left Mad Dog helpless as it fell just inside the top left corner of the Beavers goal. This locked the score at 1-1, a position the Beavers had been in to often this season. The question in everyone’s head was would this lead to another draw or could the Beavers push on and get a better outcome?

59th Minute...... GOAL 1-1 WATERSIDE

Dave Geange put in an inspired performance down the flank, his high work rate and good touches keying many of the Beavers moves forward. He would cap off this excellent display with a timely goal that restored University to the lead, this time for good.

66th Minute...... DAVE GEANGE GOAL 2-1 BEAVERS

2-1 Beavers, a lead Waterside would not be able to overcome.

It was then time for the captain to step up and lead his men to victory and Shagersma did just that, scoring a goal that iced the result and ensured the Beavers left with full points. Was it the inspiration of the headband and Torres that led to the goal?

74th Minute...... BEN JAGERSMA GOAL 3-1 BEAVERS

It is fair to say that the cap wearing goalkeeper for Waterside had a poor performance and he heard it in the second half from the Beavers supporters watching the game from behind the by-line. A number of his errors led to well taken Beavers goals that would have by snuffed out by the man in red for the Beavers had the boot been on the other foot.

In a well played game with many good performances the player of the game was undoubtedly Sam “Jockey” Cameron, who led the Beavers from the back. His combination of speed, skills, deceptive strength and jumping ability are rarely seen in Capital 10, and on this afternoon he turned in arguably the performance of his Beavers career, playing a full 90 minutes. On defence he snuffed out many Waterside attacks with well timed tackles and leaping headers and once he had the ball he was able to beat his man and deliver good balls to the midfield.

A great result for the Beavers, taking 3 points from the team sitting second on the ladder before the start of the round. What will be especially pleasing for the team is the fact that once Waterside drew level the Beavers were able to regroup and press for victory, something they have not done much in season 2008. The Beavers will be looking to continue the good form and move up the Capital 10 ladder.

University Beavers vs Waterside Karori (Preview)

Location: Raroa Park
Date: 14th June 2008
Kick-off: 2.30pm
Last time they met: 3-3 Draw, Karori, April 2008.

Match Preview:
Last time we meet the ground on first glimpse appeared perfect (that’s what one would expect from spending nearly $4 million on a ground!!) and it was… apart from the copious amounts of water that make xmas day slip and slide look like kids play. The first half was all beaver traffic, dominating on the wings with pace and precision, playing a style of football that capital 10 rarely sees. Then Mother Nature decided to even the odds, the rain intensified and the perfect pitch just couldn’t cope drainage wise. Not knowing if the ball was going to skid on, or just stop dead in its tracks, made playing the superlative ball-to-feet football nigh on impossible. I’m not going to re-live anymore – end result 3 all, and the cocky bastards had the tenacity to walk from the pitch saying it was a fair indication of the game… BOLLICKS!!!!

Tomorrow’s game is a must win, period. As we’ve said time and again if the Beavers use their pace and width, good things will come. Nearly every game we see patches of the play that will lead the beavers to the victory they so desperately need, we just need to stop taking it easy on these capital ten yobo’s and unlease. Hopefully everyone’s been keeping an eye on the Euro 08 games (how ‘bout Russia’s shock loss to Spain?), I know I’ve been studying the master skills of that Mantas Van de sar and am currently trying to perfect my graceful “salmon-through-the-air” save.

This weeks outing sees the absence of one Matty Smith – this time he will not be sweating out a BZP induced hangover (fortunately for him the flat “party pill bowl” is now well empty) – no he is currently working his way to New Plymouth to avoid a hair and makeup travesty…. Nuff said. So the defensive boys will once again have to rally and put in the huge effort that we’ve all come to expect from them. Late absentees just in, Wilko (no tennis updates sorry lads) and Dre and his beard are MIA.

An impromptu “practice” has been hailed this arvo, hopefully this will be a chance for a meeting of like minded beavers, the release of some long-shots, and the chance of getting an eye focused on the prize - Capital Ten supremacy.

Key men:
Tayne Falconer- The beavers haven’t seen him in action for a few weeks now and are expecting big things from their senior member.

Sam Barrett and Will “Porkchop” – These two tall timbers will need to exert their dominance under the high ball putting in the big defensive headers when the need arises. Both are still probing for their elusive first beavers goal, who knows what game day will bring?

Matty Smith – It’s a hard yard getting ready for a ball….

TAB Odds:
Beavers $3.50
Western Suburbs $1.20
Draw $2.90

Prediction:
Beavers 3-0.

University Beavers vs Western Subrubs (Match Report)

Final Result: University Beavers: 1 Western Suburbs: 2

Player of the Day: Guy Simmo

Having been unceremoniously postponed an easy three points the weekend before against a potential seller dweller/ wooden spooner, the Beavers were out in force on this tempestuous day in the capital, albeit with a handful of casualties before the game had even commenced. Battery had evidentially paid for biting one too many people’s faces by copping one in the aforementioned area. We had our usual quota of hangovers; Wilkinson appeared to be in some genuine distress this time round as he couldn’t even remember who had won the previous nights tennis matches. And to top it off yours truly levelled his own face out with a schweetly timed volley. Perhaps we should have seen the warning signs.

The game progressed erratically for the first 5 minutes as both teams were coming to grips with the howling gale blowing behind the Suburbs’ backs. However the game soon kick-started into action on the sidelines seeing a minor fraca between the ref and the Beaver bench. This was about the only confrontation in which the Beavers would experience a victory all day. The Western Suburbs’ tippers were clearly hell-bent on revenge for what they perceived to be “partial” adjudicating three-weekends ago when the two teams last met. Roughly 10 minutes yonder the Beavers experienced a communication breakdown with nobody in the midfield or backline accounting for the pensioner in the middle of the pitch with acres of space. A fluky chip over the top from one of the Suburbs’ players saw the old man in possession with ‘Mad Dog’ stranded in a no win position. Perhaps the initial shock of having been given the privilege of calling offsides on our defensive line could explain why Wilko rudely kept his flag down and allowed the suburbs their first goal of the match.

12th Minute, 1 - 0 SUBURBS

For the remaining of the first half, the Beavers gained ascendancy all over the park except for the one defining area: the goal mouth. Despite getting ourselves into goal scoring positions, the rub of the green wasn’t going our way. As we warmed into the game we started using more width of the amply sized ground, and really began to turn their big men around especially at the back. The halftime bell couldn’t have come at a better time for those fuck wits.

The second half began in much the same fashion as the first; a stalemate fraught for possession in the middle, complimented with some territory finding boots to touch, and the customary niggles between players and ref. Then out of nowhere another fortuitous bounce of the ball led to the Western Suburbs’ second goal of the match. Not much point on analysing this goal such was the lucky nature of it.

70th Minute, 2 - 0 SUBURBS

An ensuing altercation saw tensions all but boil completely over which culminated in their faggot up front getting subbed off. This provided the Beavers the spark they needed all game. The resulting lift in intensity and effort by the Beavers almost realised a spectacular comeback of epic proportions. It was this mongrelesque intensity which provided us with our only goal of the match. After a sustained period of play camped in their goal box, the beavers grinded out a scrappy goal in which the ball went through numerous pairs of feet before landing under the able guise of Guy Simmo who obliged by slotting home from close range.

80th Minute, Guy Simmo goal: 2 - 1 BEAVERS

Thereafter the Beavers toiled hard but to no avail as the stormy weather dictated the rest of the match. Despite our best efforts the ball would be camped in the right corner of the Suburbs’ half. The final whistle blew prematurely to say the least but we had no choice but to accept the result for that moment.

Positives to come out of this match for the Beavers were few and far between, however they will be encouraged by the resilience shown despite falling into a two goal deficit midway through the second half. For the Western Suburbs they will be thanking the heavens for the biggest boilover in Capital 10 history.

Location: Endeavour Park
Date: Saturday 7th June
Kick-Off: 12.30pm
Last time they met: 1-1 Draw. Nairnville Park. 17th May 2008

Match Preview: After a disappointing draw in the last meeting between these teams, the Beavers will be out to get three points in this match against a team they should beat. If the Beavers expect to be in the running for the title near the end of the season, maximum points will need to be taken from games like this against teams near the bottom of the table. In the last meeting the Western Suburbs players spent most of their time complaining to the referee, hopefully this time they will give that up and concentrate more on getting their asses kicked.

Where it will be won:
Own goals.

Key men:
David Geange: Has been practicing his bicycle kicks all week and will be a threat to score with one this weekend.

Ben Jagersma: Looking for a big game after spewing at the last game when he wasn’t even hung over.

University Beavers vs Olympic (Preview)

Location: McAlister
Date: Saturday 31st May
Kick-Off: 12.30pm
Last time they met: First meeting. Olympic played in Capital 11 in 2007.

Match Preview:
The Beavers return to a happy hunting ground in their clash against Olympic on Saturday. McAlister Park was the scene of a 7 – 1 preseason romp for the Beavers, with Shaggy grabbing a brace and Mad Dog rarely being threatened. However, Olympic will be no Captial 14b lightweights, and the absence of Mad Dog and Frontrunner may leave a hole at the back for the Beavers. University will be desperate to stay in touch with the top of the table, but will certainly have their work cut out in doing so.

Where it will be won:
Defence. The Beavers have only conceded two goals in their last two games, but both have come from lapses in concentration – one in failing to react to a short corner, the other directly from a kickoff. Patching these lapses up could go a long way towards taking the three points.

Hitting the target. Lets give ourselves a chance, and follow up on the keeper all day to pinch one.

Key men:
Dave: Donning the gloves and dying to get dirty.
Falconer: Always threatening to induce a red card. Alternatively a yellow card himself for simulation. Either or, the affect on the match could be instrumental.

TAB Odds:
Beavers $1.80
Olympic $4.00
Draw $2.00

Prediction:
Beavers 3 – 2.

University Beavers vs Upper Hutt City Marauders (Match Report)

Final Result : University Beavers 1: Upper Hutt Marauders 1

Player of the Day : Tanus Falconer

The lack of mental preparation may have been a factor in the end result of this match. The Beavers woke up on Saturday morning expecting a cancellation. Hearing nothing, they made their way to the group in usual fashion with one exception- Mad Dog had to be picked up out of not wanting to risk taking his wiperless car in the rain.

Battery and Sammy still looking and talking drunk from a night on the Whiskeys, Clarky had forgotten his Beaver shorts and Shaggy was as white as a ghost. No-doz.

The Marauders looked like the tossers that they are- was anyone expecting anything less?

The first half progressed like any other Capital 10 battle of the titans. With 65% of possession running towards the Porirua end at Nairnville, the Beavers were unable to open their account. The defensive line was sound and a nil all scoreline was only reflective of missed opportunities.

The second half began at a level of high intensity and it was clear a goal was coming.

An attacking corner saw Mark McLeod send in a ball to the penalty spot. The ball flew past the big thumb head of a hungry defender and boggled around. It popped clear to Falconer who moved it shamelessly from an open left foot to his favoured right boot. 'PULL THE TRIGGER' someone yells. And that he did. Only a deflection from Mannfred slowed its path. Good deflection however as it trickled into the bottom left net.

51st Minute, Luke Manfred (Tayne Falconer) …….1-0 BEAVERS

The word needed to go out to not rest on this lead and to make sure the intensity remained the same. But, as often happens with the Beavers, a equaliser was to follow. From the kickoff the Ratty Marauders pushed forward as if the Piped Piper was playing in Mad Dog's goal. Pushed out to the right they appeared to be shut down- but with only a very acute angle to work with, one of the two resident skin heads put one into the back of the net. Granted, it was a well placed shot.

52nd Minute, Tayne's headbutt mate…….. 1-1 MARAUDERS

And that was the way it remained. The chances came for the Beavers in the back end of this half but were not taken.

The points shared. A number of good things to come from the match for the Beavers. They continue to dominate and it is always a sign of dominance when teams above you on the table are happy to settle for a draw with 30 to play. The game threatened to get scrappy at times- maybe out their in the return leg fists will come out. The Beavers will be disappointed they couldn't capture the full 3 points, but a draw is better than nothing.

It is a painful process when the editor can copy and paste in the score from the week before, when that too was a disappointing 1 all draw. But it is no good worrying about what has been and gone- the Beavers have the success of their season at their own feet. The time has come to start getting full points from the scrappy matches they dominate so much.

University Beavers vs Upper Hutt City Marauders (Preview)

Location: Nairnville
Date: Saturday 24th May
Kick-Off: 12.30pm
Last time they met: 1-1 Draw. Harcourt Park. Round 2, 2007.

Match preview:
“Marauder: To rove and raid in search of plunder.”

This week’s encounter serves up a mouthwatering clash of footballing styles. The Beavers will, of course, aim to keep the ball on the deck and penetrate with width and pace. This approach has certainly paid dividends in recent weeks, with the Beavers unbeaten in their last three after a shaky start to their campaign.

The University side will also be keen to erase their demons after a disastrous result in their last performance on Narinville 1, but will certainly have fond memories of their first ever win on the very same ground against the very same opposition.

Upper Hutt, on the other hand, will undoubtedly play an aerial, direct game, and will look to spoil the Beaver rhythm wherever possible. The Marauders will be determined to get their season back on track, after being the early pacesetter but tailing off in recent weeks.

The stage is set, then, for a clash between two teams desperate to keep their position near the top of the congested Capital 10 points table.

Where it will be won:
If the Beavers keep their composure all over the park – in front of goal, at the back and through the midfield – they should be able to grind out a hard-fought result.

Last week they were unfortunate, but with more of the same, and with a little bit of luck and composure, they’ll give them selves a really good shot at winning the match.

Key men:
Little Sammy. If he keeps his cool, he’ll run circles around them all match. Also key for punching someone in the balls if a fight breaks out.
Murphs. Origin-inspired hits are tailor made for this encounter.
Mad dog: If he’s in red, the new strip will finally be complete, rendering the Beavers an unstoppable force. [They’ll probably be in orange, so it should be all go].

TAB odds:
University Beavers: $3.00
Upper Hutt Marauders: $2.20
Draw: $2.00

Prediction:
Against the odds, Beavers win 2-1.

University Beavers vs Western Suburbs (Match Report)

Final Result : University Beavers 1: Western Suburbs 1

Player of the Day : Luke Manfred

Saturday was looking pretty good. Not messing with any superstitions, the beaver drivers split up from KP and all choose their own route out to Narnville, the park looked good. Long shots during warm-ups missing, Tayne late, pork chop hungry – everything was going to plan for 3 straight wins.

It didn’t take long to figure out that Western Suburbs were a tad better/more aggressive than our last two opponents. Maybe this came as a shock as the Beavers struggled to maintain the good possession it has been use early on. Reverting back to Capital 10 football, The ‘Mad Dawg to Mann’ Hail Mary formula was looking danger time. With about 20 gone, someone sent one through (lets say Dave) which he latched on to, dribbled, then lasered in the top left from 30 out. Pretty sweet goal, celebrated with a hot Milo, and Indiana Jones later that evening.

25th Minute, Luke Manfred …….1-0 BEAVERS

It stayed that way until half time. It was essentially a 10-10 battle as pocket rocket Sam and PJ were flirting on the right wing for the remainder. Maybe 11-10 to us if you include Wilko reffing. Sammy bombed one from about 7 yards, but to off set that they Bechamed from 4 yards.

Not a lot changed in the second half. We probably secured some better possession around midfield, but weren’t too decisive closer to the box. A lot of this was from Suburbs aggressive fouling as soon the beavers got on a roll. Then, out of no where a sloppy defensive corner turned deadly as we own goaled. Didn’t get a clean look myself, but Shaggy took the blame.

65th Minute, Ben Yagesmier OG…….. 1-1

The final 25mins we owned more possession as they played a tad deeper obviously happy to concede a draw, they used their size advantage and defended bloody well. Really it seemed the only way through would be from a set piece, which we had plenty of but all came to nothing.

That was it 1-1, the points shared. Don’t like saying it, but probably a fair result.

Going forward the Beavers need to figure out how to beat these kind of scrappy teams if we want to win it all. We seem to struggle when the game doesn’t open up, allowing these older/slower teams to stay behind the ball for most of the game. As Capt 10 is loaded with these teams expect similar battles as the season pushes on. Luckily the teams above the beavers on the ladder either drew or lost, keeping us in striking distance at 4th.

University Beavers vs Western Suburbs (Preview)

Location: Nairnville
Date: Saturday 17th May
Kick-Off: 12.30pm
Last time they met: 1-1 Draw. Kelburn Park. Round 2, 2007.

Match Preview:
The University Beavers play host to the Western Suburbs in an important fixture of week 7 of the Capital 10 Competition. The Beavers are sitting comfortable in 4th spot within reach of the leaders where as Wests are lingering dangerously at the bottom of the table.
The Beavers were impressive winners last week against an understrength Brooklyn XI and Wests proved they could foot it with the leaders in the comp, putting 3 goals on the Karori Aces in a goal fest away from home. With fine weather predicted in the lead up to this match, this should provide for an entertaining and high scoring match.Last years result will play on the minds of both teams. The Beavers will not want to settle for a draw this time round, where as the sole draw point would help Wests get their season back on track.

Where it will be won:
If the Beavers can hold out the Wests' goal scorers then they should be able to come out on top in this one. Having said that, it will be important that those Beavers playing up front put the ball in the back of the net. If the Beavers play with the width and time they have in recent weeks, their perfect record in the new strips should continue.

Key men:
Guy Simmo. Playing up front Simmo has gone without a goal for a few weeks. Touted as a potential Golden Boot recipient, it is important the Beavers get him back on the score sheet.
Mark Rooter. He has developed an uncanny ability to put himself in goal scoring positions. If he can put some of these opportunities home he will significantly bolster the chances of a Beaver victory.
Mad Dog Benton. His leadership at the back as been instrumental in the last 2 weeks. If he can rally his defenders together again they will prove hard to get through.

TAB Odds:
University Beavers $1.90
Western Suburbs $4.50
Draw $2.75

Prediction:
Beavers 4-0 Victory.
